Day 1 – State College, PA
Picture of the day:
Left Fort Lee, NJ at 4 p.m. today with my mom and Kay.
Drove four hours from NYC to State College (aka Penn State University) to visit my big sis. We’ll rest here for the night. Hit a pretty big rainstorm on our way here. Got me even more freaked at the possibility of hitting flash floods and tornados on our way there. It is peak season after all :/ (ANY SURVIVAL TIPS ARE WELCOME)
So unfortunately, like last year’s cross-country road trip, I experienced a bit of a late start this morning.
My flight from Boston to NYC was delayed last night for a couple hours (with both my phones, laptop, and the in-flight entertainment system on the plane being all dead). You can just imagine the panic across the plane at that time.
Then we landed and I noticed my bag was missing at baggage claim. I stormed off to the baggage claim office remembering that the last time I was at JFK, my laptop, digital SLR camera, and all my jewerly were stolen from my bag by a TSA employee. NOT AGAIN, i thought. So I get to the office and find my checked bag just hanging out by the corner. Lovely. I then found myself in a half-hour line at National Car Rental only to find out that I didn’t actually have to wait in line at all because I’m an “Emerald Club Member.” Ha ha. Got home past midnight cranky (and sans dinner). sigh!
We were then supposed to leave this morning at 8 a.m., but my phone decided to break and Bank of America closed my account for no apparent reason the other week, so I had to make an emergency trip to their office along with an AT&T office, too.
Why do the starts of all my cross country trips (yes, all two of them) have to be so damn dramatic! anddd hectic.
So now my mama, me and Kay are relaxing in Stelli’s apartment. It’s muggy, it’s hot, and i’m pretty sure i’m being eaten alive by mosquitos this very moment… but I must say it’s been SO incredible being reunited with the ones I love most in this world. Wouldn’t want to start my trip out any other way.
Tomorrow morning we are heading to Chicago! Should take about nine hours. Not bad. Can’t wait to eat McDonald’s chicken tenders and Burger King hershey’s sundae pie.. man oh man.
Crashing….

<3 you! Stay away from the fastfood!
I agree with Joanne!
LOL KAYLA!
Tips on flash floods (some are pretty obvious):
Watch for the following signs:
- Unusually hard rain over several hours
- Steady substantial rain over several days
- A Weather report
DO NOT DRIVE THROUGH FLOODED AREAS! Even if it looks shallow enough to cross. The large majority of deaths due to flash flooding occur with people driving through flooded areas. Water only a foot deep can displace a 1500 lb. vehicle! 24” of water can easily carry most automobiles! Roads concealed by water may not be intact.
If the vehicle stalls, leave it immediately and seek higher ground. Rapidly rising water may engulf the vehicle and its occupants and sweep them away. Remember it’s better to be wet than dead!
